When my husband, Kev, and I were married, 3-year old Helen was the youngest of our four bridesmaids. As we were married immediately after Christmas, the nativity scene to the left of the alter was still in place. Whilst Kev and I were receiving the blessing, Helen quietly broke ranks (much to the disgust of her 6-year old sister, Tina) to get a closer look at baby Jesus in his crib. In front of the tableau was one of the many gratings dotted around the church. Having tired of looking at the figures, she realised if she tapped her foot the grate rocked slightly and made a very pleasing noise. I don’t know who was having most difficulty not laughing; the bride, the groom or the vicar. She hadn’t finished grabbing all of the attention. After the ceremony, my new mum-in-law gave me a bridal doll she had made. Clearly from the way Helen is straining away from Grampy’s hand, she was very engrossed with what, to her, looked like a very interesting dolly. You can almost hear her thinking “Oooh what is going on over there? I’d like that to play with.”
